EIA Power Plant Performance Map

GOAL: Find US power plants that make much less electricity than a normal plant of their own type should make. EIA = US Energy Information Administration, the government agency that collects this data.

Read this before you trust the map

Battery storage plants are shown but never flagged. "Capacity factor" (how full a plant's output runs vs. its rated size) does not mean the same thing for a battery as it does for a power plant, so judging batteries this way would be misleading.

Natural gas is one mixed group here (steady baseload plants AND on-call backup "peaker" plants together). A peaker plant running low is often doing its job, not failing. Ask if you want peakers split out separately.

Some plants report NO 2025 output yet (2025 EIA-923 data is an early, not-fully-checked release). These are gray, not counted as failing.
